Years behind walls mean more than absence from family: they mean a world that changed completely. Those released after long sentences discover that job applications have gone online, official paperwork runs through apps, and the entire labour market speaks a new language.
The new illiteracy
Literacy no longer means just reading and writing. Today's illiteracy has three faces:
- Language: reading and writing, for those school left behind
- Digital: using a computer, a smartphone and the internet safely
- Vocational: skills the labour market actually asks for
At No Oppression Organization we address all three together, because any one of them alone is not enough for a real chance at work.
What participants learn
Our courses are short and practical, designed for people who have not sat in a classroom for years:
- Computer basics: from switching on a machine to writing a CV
- Using the internet: job searches, email, online procedures
- Language courses for beginners and advanced learners
- Adult literacy in reading and writing, in a setting that protects the learner's dignity
A story from our classrooms
One participant told us: "The first time I opened an email account I was 37 years old. Two months later, I submitted the first job application of my life — by myself, without asking anyone."
That is the independence we work for: people standing on their own feet, not staying in need.
Enrolment is open and free of charge. Register your interest here and we will contact you when the next course begins.
